$100 Target shopping spree giveaway

Confession: I am not very good about photo traditions. I mean, I take shots of the kids all the time—I'd do it in my sleep if I could—but I've never been very organized about capturing them in the same exact same place and time every year, as other moms do. You know—kids holding up a cute sign with the school year, standing in front of a pumpkin, whatever. The only regular thing we do is get professional pictures of them taken every fall.

This year, though, I have started a bona fide photo tradition. OK, posing the kids on our front porch or bus steps isn't very creative, but I can definitely see how much the kids have grown (and, in Dave's case, shrunk).

That outfit is just about as dressy as Sabrina gets these days; she didn't even want to wear the nice sweater she'd planned to. Sure enough by the second day of school, she was back to wearing one of Max's plain short-sleeve t-shirts and a pair of shorts. "Don't you want to wear something a little nicer?" I asked. "No," she said, firmly.

Max is far easier, because while he generally prefers purple clothes, he really doesn't care that much about what he wears. Every season, I hit Target and swoop up a whole bunch of Cherokee clothes for him (which he's wearing here). They fit well and they're durable, especially the jeans.

Want some money for back to school clothes? I have a $100 Target gift card to give away! (Dog not included.)

To enter to win it, leave a comment about your approach to photographing the kids—catch as catch can? Any annual traditions?

Bonus entries:
Tweet about this giveaway (one a day). A tweet: Win a $100 Target gift card for @cherokee_usa clothes, via @lovethatmax. Ends 9/19, http://tinyurl.com/4x7vr5y #giveaway

This giveaway is open until Monday, September 19 at 11:59 EST, and is for U.S. residents 18 and older. I will randomly pick the winner at random.org, alert you by email and announce it here. Note, you must leave your email below if it is not visible on your blog.

Also! Want to win $1000? Cherokee is having a First Day of School Photo contest:

To enter, like their Facebook page, click on the "First Day Of School Photo Contest" link in the left column, and upload a shot of your child on his or her first day of school. You could score $1000 in Cherokee clothing and a $300 smartphone from Cozi, a free online organizer to help you manage family life. The contest ends September 30.

Good luck!

UPDATE: The winner is Tabathia. Congrats!

Thanks to Cherokee and Cozi for sponsoring this giveaway.

  13. I have grand illusions that I will start photo taking traditions. Reality is cruel. I manage to get a first day of school pic of the kids in our yard. I take tons of candid shots. Only time I manage professional pics is if it's a cousin picture and my sister does all the work..coordinates and purchases outfits for 5 kids, schedules, orders etc.

  14. I just take pictures of my children EVERYWHERE all the time. They get real tired of seeing the camera come out. :)

  17. I do the typical, on the porch first day of school photo, but that's it for photo traditions.

  25. Definitely not taking as many photos as I used to but we take it when we go somewhere like the park or pool or zoo, before I know it he'll be all grown up so I better take them now! We do professional photos once a year, coming up soon before his 3rd birthday in November!

We don't do it in the same place every year, but we have a tradition of going to some of the very nicely decorated parts of our town or surrounding towns at Christmas time. It's fun bc it's a family outing, and the kids love seeing the decorations!!

  28. I like photographing my kids on our front porch because it's sunny yet they're shielded a bit so they're not squinting. I jump up and down and make funny faces to get them to smile.

Well, I never thought that when I was a granny I would be re-doing the role of the everyday one who gets them off to and from school, but because my family works 35 miles away that's the way it is and I love it though my old age shows it differant than my first time around with my daughter. I love capturing all the one time moments on camera, I actually started my 7yr old grandson a memory alblum to enjoy and look back on because no one prints the pictures anymore like years ago with everything digital now. My grandson gets tired of the snap shots so I just click and get what I can but I think natural instead of preparing is best in photos to enjoy.I do both drop of school picture and pickup, I guess grannys over do it lol

    - Halloween costume with jack o'lantern on the front steps of the house

    - sitting on the couch with this ridiculous stuffed turkey my aunt made as a gift to us for a Tgiving centerpiece

    - Christmas Eve dressed up for church in front of the tree

    - Easter dress & Easter basket

    - first day of school with her backpack

    - last day of school in same spot as first day of school shot with her backpack

(Um, can you tell I have just one kid and a serious paparazzi urge?)

I adore Cherokee clothes. They wash well (my kiddo is HARD on clothes) and are well within our getting-more-modest-with-every-passing-month budget.

I appreciate Sabrina's firm stance, & I adore Max' purple bandana (I am trying to figure out a ~something to drape around Leo's neck; (no! neither as a fashion statement, nor as a noose!)I need to figure out a wearable he can use for his excess saliva... Perhaps we should try a green bandana, as green is his color. However, we've been told 3rd graders & older may not use bandanas, (due to fear of gang affiliation?! In this tiny armpit hamlet?) Leo is a 2nd grader.Hmm..

Leo will not pose for photos. My only hope is the viewfinder Display set to ON at all times. Lots of fun "catching" that way. You can see a few on my Facebook profile...The best are generally shot by Robin (Daddy).

  145. Usually I take a whole bunch of shots and just hope there's a good one in there. DH is much better at it than me.

  151. My kids used to like being photographed up to the age of about 8. After that they just don't seem to like being in front of the camera, so I have to catch them when I can.

  155. I prefer to take a series of photos when my son isn't looking because when he does know I am taking the picture, I get the fake smile. One of our traditions is taking a picture of his annual mohawk haircut.

  169. Our tradition is... um... ok so we don't actually have any photo traditions. My excuse is that the kid just started preschool this year. I did take a picture of her on the first day of school out of the balcony in which her face is all scrunched up.

  173. Spontaneous photos are always the best. You don't capture their essence with those posed photos with the trapped smiles. Catch them unaware.

  178. I definitely prefer candid to posed shots, and I usually have my camera in hand (or in bag) to catch those unexpected, natural moments in action. Of course, momentous days like the first day of school call for some formality as well, so I'll have them stand in front of the house before going to the bus stop, but even then I encourage the kids to be spontaneous in their expressions and movements when I take the shot. Thanks!
