Famous sayings, as retold by 1st graders

Ever have to stifle laughter around your kid because you know you shouldn't be cracking up over something they've done but it's beyond funny? That's what happened the other day when Sabrina came home with a pamphlet her class had put together.

Her teacher had written out the beginning parts of well-known sayings, and left the endings blank for kids to fill in. I was thrilled to see the ones Sabrina had gotten right, but I was even more thrilled by the ones she didn't get right, starting with "You can pick your friends but you can't pick your nose."

I didn't want to mortify Sabrina or blow my teeth out from repressing the laughter bubbling up inside, so I put the pamphlet aside, and then I read it to Dave after the kids were asleep and we cackled. Some Sabrina faves:

Better to be safe than a tiger.

Children should be seen and not in the night.

Look before you walk on water.

A picture is worth a thousand dollars.

Too many cooks spoil the whole table.

Other kids were similarly amusing:

Too many cooks spoil the orange juice.

An apple a day will make you throw up.

You can lead a horse to water, but you can't make him tap dance.

No use crying over spilt ice-cream

No use crying over spilt soup.

The grass is always greener on the golf course.

Good news travels on TV.

An apple a day keeps the teachers away.

If at first you don't succeed you get consequences.

Children should be seen and not at school.

Better to be safe than a frog.

The phrase that consistently stumped every single kid: "A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush." (Really not the most catchy phrase.)

A bird in the hand is scary. (Sabrina)

A bird in the hand is dinner.

A bird in the hand is awful.

A bird in the hand is would be cool.

A bird in the hand is a pet.

A bird in the hand is wings.

A bird in the hand is awesome.

I thought this one of Sabrina's was particularly great:

  1. I love these! And so lovely to have some second sibling input!;) my fav is the green paper comment! Very clever! I think my Pepper would get along famously with your
Sabrina especially having such wonderful big brothers in common xxxx

  2. "you can pick your friends and you can pick your nose, but you can't pick your friend's nose"

  3. Maybe Sabrina and Max should be a comedy duo. Max has charisma and a sense of humor and Sabrina could be the supermodel that says all the punch lines.

  4. Good job to sabrina and class very funny When does she get out of school?

  5. The saying was amusing. However, a while ago on our fridge, we had a magnet reading, "If at first, you don't succeed, try it your wife's way."

Anyhow, I love your blog! xD

  6. That is totally cute! I love it. You've got to admit, that their answers are pretty creative. And I wouldn't necessarily expect first graders in this day and age to know some of those phrases.

  7. *snrk* Always love this kind of thing! Sometimes, the minds of kids really do make more sense ;-)

  8. The grass is greener on green paper. So funny.

  9. Aaah my girls are growing up too fast Kelsey my oldest finished elementary school today. My baby's off to the middle school.Kelsey is my niece who I legally adopted nearly 11 years ago.My youngest sister got with the wrong crowd and drunk alot.Unable to raise her daughter I stepped in or else kelsey would have been been in custody of the state. Kelsey has speech delays and vision issues. She is in public school. Maddie my middle girl is her school for children for devolpmental delays.(It only goes until the 3rd grade)Maddie will be going to a new school for kids on the spectrum in th fall.Maddy has PDD-NOS. Hannah is my little baby girl. She just finished pre school and will be attend the same school next year.Hannah is deaf with colcher implants. She goes to a school for children who are deaf.
