My name is not Rio

Some days, I am hungry like the wolf to go back to that pre-parent period of my life, when I had time to go to concerts. Although I have never been a girl on film or experienced a union of the snake or had Big Hair of the above variety (nor have I ever been a man), I would like to know if there is anyone out there who feels the same? Please, please tell me now—is there something I should know?

OK, peoples: One guess as to which concert I am seeing tonight.

Ding-ding-ding! Yep, I've been gifted some Duran Duran tickets. (And if you said "Wham!" you sniffed way too much hairspray back in the day.) The group is on their All You Need Is Now North American tour through October. Tonight, Dave and I are going to the Madison Square Garden concert, and I am psyched.

The Notorious boys (the original ones)

Duran Duran is one of my all-time favorite groups from my teen years. They were MTV, back when MTV used to only run music videos (as in, when it used to be good). The group's 13th album, All You Need Is Now, came out last December. Check out the lead single: It's their original sound, the one that made them big. (Dave, stop reading now.) My Simon Le Bon crush has returned.

Dave and I have seen a few good concerts in recent years—The Who, The Dead, John Fogerty, Norah Jones—but we don't go to ones anywhere near as often as we used to. You can bet I'll be singing my head off tonight. (Don't say a prayer for me now, save it 'til the morning after.)

I must stop now or one of you might reflex me to death.

Got fond memories of Duran Duran? What music most reminds you of your teen years?

  1. I am so jealous!! I have loved Duran Duran since I was 12 years old, *cough*27*cough* years ago, and still have a crush on John Taylor! :)

  2. Bit older than you, so Jethro Tull and Meatloaf.

I got to see Meatloaf last year and he did a hilarious bit where he came out in a wig styled like his old hair!

  3. I was a HUGE Duran Duran fan! Was obsessed with them!
I think they have aged quite well, especially John Taylor.
    Have fun!

  4. The first pop/rock concert I ever went to was Duran Duran at Madison Square Garden waaaaaay back in the 80s. *swoooooon* I was going to marry John Taylor back then, for the record. Now I just follow them all on Twitter and feel remarkably jealous of those with the good fortune to be attending a show on their current tour. (They aren't playing way up here in the boondocks of western, upstate NY...)

Hope the concert is fantabulous, that your seats give you a view to a kill and you enjoy the wild boys!

  5. We must be exactly the same age because Duran Duran= my teenage years too. Love. I had posters on my closet door. Swoon...

  6. My teenage years were the late 90s - 2000s, (i turned 13 in 1995) so im not actually sure of who Duran Duran is :). My music was pop punk, Green Day, the Vandals, Me First and the Gimmie Gimmies... Good old' high school!
I have also always loved me some show tunes! Still do!

  7. Oh, don't get me started - how about the Thompson Twins and Yaz? Also, "say, say, say" by Michael Jackson and Paul McCartney. I also loved Wham.

  8. duran duran was my first concert..still have the sheet i held up proclaiming my love for them!

  9. I saw them for the first time ever this past Spring and I've been a fan obsessed since that Monday night many years ago when I heard Hungry Like the Wolf on my clock radio at 7:50 PM. I even remember what I was wearing that night. No matter. They really know how to entertain, so have a great time!

  10. JEALOUS!!!!!!!!!! OMG! Huge fan, have a great time Ellen. But all time crush has to be JT!! <3

  11. Jealous! I was a huge DD fan back in the day. Saw them twice at the Spectrum in Philly.

  12. Ellen, I had always planned to marry Simon and have 8 kids with him! (My girlfriends tell me I have the last laugh, since he's aged the most gracefully and is still a looker.)

I've seen them in concert 2x and consider myself lucky. I looooved 7 and the Ragged Tiger and all the videos they made in the 80s. I haven't listened to their most recent albums.

I hope you guys had a great time!!

  13. I know exactly what you mean. I have 3 kids ages 2, 2, and 4. We never do anything but zoo, park, etc. My husband and I flew with just Rowan to St. Louis for him to have a rhyzotomy and actually had fun before the surgery. Sort of felt guilty but you can take Rowan anywhere so we went to all these nice restaurants, sat at outdoor cafes drinking wine and having fine cheeses. Strolled around looking at all the nice homes. Snuck wine from the hotel restaurant to our hotel room. It felt like the pre-kid days even though Rowan was with us (I can do 1 kid blind-folded at this point). It was very surreal that we were having so much fun yet we were there for a scary surgery.

    Julie Lewin

I love Duran Duran. I was born in 75.

  14. I'd like to have a private concert given to me by Adam Lambert........and another private concert given to me by Michael Buble.

  15. I had my fill of "non-parent" days because I came so late to the experience, so I don't miss those times like some do!

Have fun at the concert--relive those glory days!!!

  16. Am I the only one who's never heard of Duran Duran God I'm young LOL :)

  17. I lived my teenage years listening to The Cure, The Smiths and my all time favorites Depeche Mode. But one of the best concerts I went to was DD at The Forum in LA. Erasure was the opening band. Amazing!

  18. Nisha: Go directly to YouTube and check out old videos!

Mari, I love me some Meatloaf.

V, sorry to hear your marriage plans with Simon did not work out. His loss.

Felicia: My glory days are most definitely NOT done! :)

Anyone else here a Yaz fan?

    Off to concert!

  19. I am jealous too! I so love Duran Duran. I was soooo in love with John Taylor back in the day.

    Hope you have fun.

  20. When I saw Duran Duran years I lucked onto front row, center tickets. Last minute. I was in heaven. Totally (almost) made up for the fact that I didn't get to see then in the 80's (I saw them when Come Undone and Ordinary World were popular)
Have FUN! and give Simon my love!

hmmmm I wonder if they are coming to my city...off to check now

  21. I've seen them three times in San Juan and it never gets old. I have almost all their albums on 33s (mostly hand me downs from my older brother).

Love What Happens Tomorrow... Hope you had fun at the concert.

  22. Oh Ellen, I am with you! I was a HUGE Duran Duran fan in my teens! Though I was always a John Taylor fan. Hope the concert was great?

  23. The concert was spectacular! They sounded even better than they used to, and played good new music as well as old faves—Rio, Wild Boys, The Reflex, Notorious. I just almost fell off my seat when they said they'd been around for 30 years. !!!

  24. I was a Duran Duran fan, as well, but....Bon Jovi!!!!!! I still have "Livin' on a Prayer" on my running playlist - it is one of my go-to songs on long training runs.

Mr. Andi and I got to see Bon Jovi last fall. They were part of the free concert series to help bring tourists back into the area following the BP oil spill.

  25. So true about the music. I'm a tried and true Stones fan, but the Stones are everything to me. It's Meatloaf's "Two Out of Three Ain't Bad" that zips me right back to the teen angst years.

  26. I got to see JLS 2 years ago. It was pretty good but I felt awkward being the only American there I had no kids at that time. I went to the hotel after the concert. Not sure if you've heard of JLS, they're a British boyband.
