  1. Thanks for this weekly post! This week I'm sharing my post about my terrible frustration at hearing the word no all the time with respect to my daughter's needs. As we begin to deal with her district to make her education plan, I'm particularly frustrated by their stance toward parent advocacy.

    1. Hi Hilary, I read your post and can certainly relate to your situation. As parents we have to advocate for our children and push for more - we may not always get it but we keep trying! You sound like a great advocate for Esme. The biggest problem I see in parental advocacy is parents who let their emotions get the best of them, There is a big difference between being assertive and being argumentative, and many parents don't understand this. Being argumentative can cause a lot of problems and doesn't make the other person or entity enclined to help you. BTW, the photo of her is adorable!

  3. I need to vent and figured this is a good place to do it. I was at a small locally owned coffee shop with one of my best friends-hanging out as teenage girls do. This woman-probably in her early 40s came up to my friend and started calling her "an angel" for "providing companionship to a disabled person." "They are so hard to deal with, you are a blessing." My friend was stunned. I couldn't take it anymore and said, "Actually we are just friends hanging out." She walked away in a tizzy. I wear a hearing aid in my right ear and it isn't super duper visible(light blue w/clear mold). Seriously, people?

    1. Kathryn, as Max's mom, I see misplaced pity a lot, but wow--I can't believe this woman said that. What is WRONG with people?! Bravo for your response.

    2. "They are so hard to deal with"? Really? I think she's harder to deal with. Then again, all people are hard to deal with in some way...
