My youngest brother has downs, my parents had him late and there was a huge gap between him and the second youngest and he never had anyone to play with him at his level. It would be painful to take him to the play ground and the other kids would come up and ask questions and when they would figure out he was some what different you can tell how they would gradually start keeping a distance. He didn't have an advocate and it makes me happy to know that there are kids out there willing to accept those differences as normal. That's a fantastic son you're raising.

My little brother was right on the borderline of moderate and profound mental retardation due to a medical malpractice when he was a baby. He was cute as a button- and living with him was like living with an overgrown monkey. He couldnt walk in a straight line but he could climb out bookshelves and wedge himself under the couches. I teased him, tickled him, played with him, and protected him, all in one breath sometimes. It's a different relationship than you have with your healthy siblings, but both types of relationships are beautiful in their own ways. You've raised you kids to understand that already at such a tender age- bravo! Pat yourself on the back, then enjoy some good, fancy chocolate (with wine, if you'd prefer). You deserve that moment. I wonder if your answers to Teddy about his sister might do just as well for Jo Jo if and when she asks similar questions about herself? Your explanations just seemed so simple and thorough, fearless, and straightforward.Andrew Pulranghttp://disabilitythinking.blogspot.comnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-401303964563152307.post-25201330042640476812013-10-31T14:50:32.707-04:002013-10-31T14:50:32.707-04:00Absolutely moving.
