iPad giveaways for kids with special needs: here's another!

I've been wishing I could do more iPad giveaways for kids with special needs. And then, I got an email from a reader, Deborah, who lives in San Francisco and works for a non-profit. Deborah has an iPad she'd like to give to one of our kids. As she wrote, "My husband recently received an iPad as a Christmas bonus from his boss and so now we have two. I remember seeing several posts about an iPad giveaway gone awry and the many parents who commented how much they would appreciate one for their child—as well as posts about Max's iPad really opening up a whole new world for him. So we thought, why not give one of our iPads to a family who could actually benefit from having one, and would use it for something more useful than reading People magazine and playing Scrabble!"

So, I have Deborah's iPad to give away to a child with special needs who will benefit from it.

Here it is: It's the original iPad, 16GB with WiFi, model A12919, in silver. It's in great shape. As Deborah says, "It was purchased Christmas 2010 and hasn't left the house since it was purchased."

To enter this giveaway, please leave a comment about how your child with special needs could benefit from an iPad. You do not have to say a lot, but you do need to leave an email if one is not visible on your blog.

Please note, if you already entered the iPad giveaway I did in July, you can just write "I entered the July giveaway and would like to be entered here" BUT you have to use the same username as your original entry (and, again, make sure I have your email).

The winner will be asked to provide a letter of need from a speech therapist or doctor in their child's life. The letter from the therapist or doctor must include her qualifications and contact information so that he or she can be contacted to verify that, indeed, the recipient is a child in need of an iPad.

RULES OF ENTRY

• This giveaway is open until Thursday, March 1, 2012 at 11:59 ET.
• The giveaway is open to residents of the U.S. and Canada.
• Valid email address required, so I can reach you. If your email is not visible on your blog, you will need to leave it with your comment. If there is no email, your entry is disqualified.
• One entry per family, please.
• No entries accepted past the deadline.

WINNER DETERMINATION

• One winner will be chosen at random via random.org within 24 hours when the giveaway is closed, and I will email you to let you know you have won. This is not a merit-based giveaway; all kids who could benefit from iPads and speech apps deserve to have them.
• If I do not hear back from a winner within seven business days, another winner will be chosen.
• If a winner does not produce a letter from their child's speech therapist or doctor within two weeks of being informed of the win, another winner will be selected.

Good luck! I wish I had iPads to give away to each and every one of you.

UPDATE: The winner of the iPad, chosen via random.org, is Jen Wen. I hope to have at least one other iPad to give away this year; every one of your kids deserves one.

  1. I'd love this for my child with Down syndrome. She's almost a year, so I'd love it to work on pointing, and also on some object identification. As she gets older, I'd also like to use the communication/speech apps I know are out there!

  2. I believe I entered in July, but would love to win this for my 8 year old daughter. She has been diagnosed as being globally delayed. She has greatly improved over the past year by playing on the computer, and searching YouTube for Sonic the Hedgehog videos.

    Thanks again!

Thank you to the reader who is donating their ipad for this giveaway. Clearly, it wasn't something u had to do, but I'm certain it will make a profound impact for the family who is chosen.

  10. Oh man...we've been wanting an ipad for our son for a LONG time! He is almost four and is non verbal, but he is totally IN THERE!! He understands so much of what we say and follows commands to his ability...and he speech therapist thinks he would benifit from the communication app on the ipad. The problem we've run into is that the ipad 2 has a magnet in it, and my son has a VP shunt. The magnet in the ipad 2 has proven to interfere with VP shunts and our neurosurgeon wants us to get the first version of the ipad. so this ipad would be perfect for him!! Thank you so much for the opportunity to have a chance to win one!

She keyboards well, and has a keyboard to use at school, but nothing that can be transported back and forth. She's an artist and a writer, and an ipad would go far to helping her to succeed as she looks towards, maybe, college.

  19. What a fantastic reader. There are some great people out there. How heartwarming.
We've been wanting to get Darsie (7, right hemi cerebral palsy) an iPad for awhile now. She is finally up to grade level at school but is really struggling with keeping up in writing. We've talked to the school about adaptive technology for her and we've been told it is a real fight with the school district to get them to do anything like this, so it would be up to us, for the most part, to provide her with a tablet. She is already a computer whiz, so I know she would flourish with an iPad.

  35. Hi Ellen! Thank you for this wonderful opportunity! We have been discussing purchasing an I-pad for Jake. He has recently started using one in school as well as trialing other augmentative devices. He is six years old and is globally developmentally delayed , non-verbal and has some significant motoric issues which make it very difficult for him to produce a variety of speech sounds. Vivian has epileptic encephalopathy which causes a variety of issues including cognitive delay. She is able to use an iPad in her LD classroom and absolutely blossoms when she does.

The apps they use are very engaging, and the touch screen is so much easier for her to use. I would love to be able to replicate that learning at home.

  46. its so awesome for you to offer this to another family who could benefit. My daughter is 8 years old and was diagnosed with ASD 5 years ago. We were fortunate enough to get her enrolled in an excellent private school with help from the state of Ohio Autism Scholarship. She attended this school for 2 years but when she progressed to kindergarten, we had to remove her and enroll her in our district school (Cleveland Metropolitan school district) because we could not afford the HUGE spike in tuition even with the scholarship (tution for K-12 $60,000; scholarship for pre K-12 =$20000). since she has been in Cleveland schools, there is lack of technology which was really helpful in getting her to use words. She has digressed since being enrolled in our district school and i feel like a failure because there is nothing I can do. I cannot afford to move to a "better" district, and I cannot afford to buy the technology that I know would be helpful in improving her communications to us. I am doing my best just to pay bills and keep food in the house. Im a part of that middle class family where we are too rich to be poor and get any assistance and benefits and too poor to be rich. I would absolutely LOOOOOOOOVE for my daughter to be the recipient of the ipad. Just the fact that you are so generous and offering it to another family is pleasing to my soul! Thank you for your consideration! i have 2 emails where you can reach me: i prefer: skeeweeaka08@hotmail.com but skeeweeaka08@yahoo.com is okay too. thanks!

  64. I'd love an iPad for my son with Autism. For starters, I'd get my iPhone back... but I'd also be able to load it with even more therapy programs. He learns primarily through technology, and starts Kindergarten this coming year. I have been battling the whole "IQ" ordeal with his sped preschool, and we both agree when it's involving technology, he is a sponge. I'd like to integrate an iPad into his education accommodations so that he can have an even better shot at having a successful school experience. Some of the apps that I have on my iPhone for him are the behavior tracking or emotion teaching, as well as social stories. It's hard because I have to be able to use my phone as my phone, my work contact, and my email/bill pay (it's literally our only type of gadget we own.. no comp/tv/etc.) so he could actually keep it going while I call the insurance company. :) Thank you for the opportunity! 78. My 2 year old son has been given the diagnosis of sensory dysfunction disorder and developmentally delayed. We have been told that he will most likely receive a diagnosis of autism. His current speech therapist said he would benefit from an Ipad, but financial that cannot happen. When my son stated regressing I resigned from my teaching position to stay at home and help him. It was too hard to go to work and help other children when my very own was struggling. The Ipad would help my son, who doesn't talk with his expressive and receptive language as well as his fine motor skills (for example isolating his index finger). Thanks again to the generous lady who is donating her Ipad. There should be more people like you! Good luck everyone!

  79. My daughter Abbi has been using an Ipad for the last year and a half with her early intervention teachers. She currently gets to use one about an hour a week when her teachers are here with them. She will be 3 in April and there has been much talk about how she needs an Ipad of her own as a communication device/assistive technology. We live in one of the poorest counties in Minnesota and may never see the funding she is eligible for to get one due to long waiting lists. I know that Abbi would benefit greatly if she were to get an Ipad of her own. Abbi has multiple disabilities and serious health problems. She recently underwent open heart surgery for an asd which is seen in about 50% of children with Down Syndrome. She also has Epilepsy, which has caused partial loss of her right side, a significant speech delay and she also has a hearing deficient. She does very well with recognizing images and making choices when given pictures of objects. Thank you very much for your generosity. The world would be a much better place if the people who can helped those in need! =) My email is voe_j@hotmail.com

  80. This is an amazing thing you got going here. I know many families would benefit from such generosity. My 8yr old son has Cerebral Palsy. We have been interested in getting him an iPad for a couple years now, but we are just not able to supply it for him. He is non verbal but very bright and we know he has a lot to say! We have had the opportunity to try an iPad with him and we have great hopes for it. What a blessing this will be to some child and family. Thanks! God bless! aprilgambino@yahoo.com

  81. I have a daughter (9 yrs. old) that is in a Special Day Class at her school and a son (5 yrs. old) who is in a general Ed Kindergarten class. They both have developmental delay, Ataxia, Hypotonia, and Ptosis. They have been seen for many years at Lucille Packard Children's Hospital and the doctor's have not been able to give them an official diagnosis. My children both receive Speech, Occupational and physical therapy through there school and use a IPad in therapy. They love using it and It would be great if they could use one at home. My kids come and talk about how they love going to occupational therapy to use the IPad. My kids would be so grateful if they could have one at home. :) my email address is Brian8309@gmail.com

  88. I would love to win this for my daughter Katie, she just turned 5 and is a in utero stroke survivor and RH. I've heard so many stories of kids like Katie doing such great things with a ipad, I just know it would do awesome things for her. We are working to get her ready for Kindergarten next year and I think a ipad would help her with so many of the skills she needs and it would be able to grow with her too.

I also want to say thank you to the family who is donating the ipad. What a special gift to give a special child.

  97. I would love an ipad for my 6 year old sn daughter Sierra who can't talk. She has a chromosome duplication on her 7th chromosome and has global developmental delay. I see in her the ability to learn, but her thoughts are trapped inside with no way to communicate. I have seen that she can use the limited apps available on android phones and I think the ipad could be a major breakthrough for her. Thank you for this opportunity. 98. Our son Miles (7) has Down syndrome and a history of multiple seizure disorder. His seizures were primarily infantile spasms--100 a day and devastating. We watched him lose all his skills as an infant and fought with everything we had. At the age of four we finally got him seizure-free, and the results are nothing short of a miracle. Very slowly but surely he is learning to do things like grab objects. His dad and I are musicians and Miles is mesmerized by music. His OTtried a guitar app on the school iPad and Miles went crazy for it. He is fascinated by my iPhone too. He's been working hard with his SLP and an iPad was next on our list because it will open up a whole new world to him. Thanks for putting on such a nice giveaway.

  102. My son is 9 years old and he has been using a teachers personal IPad for his education and learning his physical motor skills are not complete and the use of an IPad to use programs such as Dragon have brought his grades up dramatically. I would hope to dontate the speech program to somebody else because his verbal skills are developed, the reason I am applying for him is because the school is taking budget cuts again and he'll no longer have access to such devices and we cannot afford one for him to stay up with his class. If he's not eligible I understand but special needs come in many different designs.
Thanks so much for everything you do!

  103. Hello! my son just turned 4 today! He is diagnosed with autism and is non verbal... But when it comes to computer technology he is extremely smart and it calms him down. Every time we go to my mothers house he uses her iPad and cries when it's time to leave because be wants to continue watching movies and playing games on it. Right now it's a hard time for us, I'm not able to purchase him one which I wish I could. I've read that studies shown that iPad are used to help non verbal children express themselves, it would change my life forever to have an iPad for my son and to hear him say MOM or to point to a picture and try to sound it out!!! I wish everyone luck and I send BLESSINGS to everyone's children! My email is k a I s h e a 1 @ g m a i l . c o m
