You're right, most kids have no idea why the word is offensive, and saying that in any message you send out would be a great note to start on. It might help to show them some stuff online that explains why the word hurts. The Special Olympics has a campaign asking people not to use the word, and here is a good overview from them of why the word is offensive: http://www.r-word.org/r-word-effects-of-the-word.aspx. I did an explanatory video, here: http://www.lovethatmax.com/2012/03/would-you-call-my-child-retard.html and there's also this great letter from a Special Olympics athlete to Ann Coulter after she described President Obama as a "retard" https://specialolympicsblog.wordpress.com/2012/10/23/an-open-letter-to-ann-coulter/. I also think this post is very eye-opening, from a family out to dinner whose child was called a name: http://www.secondchance.org/labels-lie-2/the-retard-in-the-next-booth/. My wife and I have both worked with individuals with developmental disabilities and both had relatives with the same disabilities. We have never used the term "retarded" to describe a person or situation, and we very shocked when we received a call from our 9-year-old son's teacher letting us know that he had been doing it quite a bit at school. We asked him where he had heard the term and he said he had picked it up from several friends in his baseball league. I understand that most of the kids are probably not even aware that it is offensive and hurtful, without us as parents being proactive and telling them so. What I want to do is to send a letter, or email to all of the parents/coaches in his baseball league to let then know of the situation, without causing a "firestorm" of negative reaction. As I said, this is something that is very personal to me and don't want to sound too accusatory when I present this letter/email.

Do you have any suggestions?

I will look for any replies.

Thanks!Outlawshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/18150730751287200237noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-401303964563152307.post-64576676755963677672015-03-22T10:10:52.691-04:002015-03-22T10:10:52.691-04:00Amen.
