The hat that's better than therapy

The theme over at I Heart Faces this week is hats, and I immediately thought of this photo.

An old childhood friend of mine gave Max the sailor suit when he was born. I used to regularly dress Max up in it and do photo shoots, just for fun. I needed stuff to comfort me that first long year after Max was born, when we knew he was at risk for such terrible things. Making him look impossibly, ridiculously cute helped.

He outgrew the suit soon enough, but the hat stuck around. For years, whenever my mother and sister visited, they delighted in putting it on him. Max is six now, and that hat is still in the top drawer of his bureau. It doesn't fit, but every once in a while I prop it on his head or on a teddy bear's, and we both giggle.

  1. Oh my, how stinkin' adorable! I realize he is six now, but I could totally scoop him up and smother him with a bazillion kisses. I'm sure he'd hate it, but he's so daggone irrisistable.
